Tokyo to Osaka: Shinkansen, Bus & Flight Guide

Tokyo and Osaka sit about 500 km apart, and the shinkansen connects them in two and a half hours with a train every few minutes. It is the default choice for visitors, but buses and flights have a role if you are watching your budget or arriving from a different airport. This guide compares all three as of 2026, with realistic door-to-door times and costs. Related reading: our Japan shinkansen guide and the getting around Japan guide.

By Shinkansen: Nozomi, Hikari or Kodama

The Tokaido Shinkansen leaves from Tokyo Station (and also Shinagawa and Shin-Yokohama), calls at Nagoya and Kyoto, and ends at Shin-Osaka. Services run roughly 6:00 to 23:00. The Nozomi is the fastest; the Hikari makes extra stops; the Kodama stops everywhere and is best ignored. For the Nozomi, buy a reserved seat or board an unreserved car (cars 1-3 on most trains) outside busy periods. We explain the seating, Green Car upgrades and boarding etiquette in the shinkansen guide.

One planning point: Shin-Osaka is not where most people want to be. Transfer to Umeda (JR Kyoto line, 4 minutes), Namba (Midosuji line, about 15 minutes) or Tennoji for sightseeing. If your hotel is in Namba or Dotonbori, see where to stay in Osaka before choosing a base, and check getting around Osaka for the subway and IC card basics.

By Highway Bus

Buses leave Busta Shinjuku, Tokyo Station and sometimes Ikebukuro, arriving at Umeda, Namba or Osaka Station. A typical Willer Express overnight service departs around 24:30 and reaches Umeda about 08:30, a trip of roughly 8 hours, at about ¥5,500 on the sample fares we checked for 2026. Cheaper four-abreast seats start nearer ¥3,500, while premium, curtained seats cost more. The saving is around ¥8,000-10,000 per person against the Nozomi, plus a hotel night you do not pay for. The cost is sleep quality and a tired first day. Daytime buses exist but take 8-10 hours and rarely make sense.

By Plane

Haneda to Osaka Itami takes about 1 hour 15 minutes and is run by ANA and JAL; Kansai International (KIX) is reached from Haneda, Narita and Tokyo by low-cost carriers like Peach and Jetstar Japan. Fares swing widely. A booked-early budget flight can undercut the shinkansen, but you must add transfers on both sides (Tokyo airport rail, about ¥300-1,500; Osaka airport train or bus, about ¥700-1,500) and arrive earlier than you would for a train. Our Haneda airport transfer guide and Kansai airport transfer guide cover those legs. Flying makes the most sense if you are connecting from or to an international flight at Kansai, or if you find a promotional fare.

When Does the JR Pass Pay Off?

A Tokyo-Osaka return on the Hikari is roughly ¥28,800 against a 7-day pass at ¥50,000, so the pass does not pay off on this route alone. It covers the Hikari and Kodama only, not the Nozomi. It starts to make sense if you add Hiroshima, Kanazawa or Nagoya side trips inside seven days. For the numbers, see our Japan Rail Pass guide, JR Pass alternatives and Golden Route without a JR Pass.

Stop in Kyoto on the Way

Kyoto is 15 minutes from Osaka by Shinkansen, so many travellers break the journey. Read Tokyo to Kyoto for that leg, and use luggage forwarding to send bags straight on to Osaka.

Once You Arrive

Pick up a Suica or ICOCA card (see our Suica guide) for the subway. An Osaka food tour is a strong first-evening plan around Dotonbori and Kuromon Market. For other options, browse Osaka tours, and read our Osaka city guide and Tokyo city guide.

Our Verdict

Take the Nozomi unless price is your main concern. Use the overnight bus only if you value saving money over sleep, and fly only with a cheap fare or a Kansai connection. Prices move, so verify on official sources before travel.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the train from Tokyo to Osaka?
The Nozomi shinkansen takes about 2 hours 30 minutes from Tokyo to Shin-Osaka. The Hikari takes around 3 hours and the Kodama around 4 hours.
What is the cheapest way from Tokyo to Osaka?
An overnight highway bus, from approximately ¥3,500 to ¥7,000 as of 2026. Low-cost carrier flights from Narita can occasionally match that, but airport transfers add cost and time.
Is it cheaper to fly or take the shinkansen?
Usually the shinkansen is better value once transfers are counted. The train costs about ¥14,700 reserved and runs city centre to city centre; flights can be ¥8,000 to ¥20,000 plus ¥1,000 to ¥3,000 either side to reach the airports.
Does the JR Pass cover Tokyo to Osaka?
It covers the Hikari and Kodama but not the Nozomi or Mizuho. Pass holders usually need to add other JR travel to make the 7-day pass worthwhile.
Which Osaka station does the bullet train arrive at?
Shin-Osaka, in the north of the city. From there the Midosuji subway or the JR Kyoto line takes you to Umeda, Namba and Tennoji in 5 to 20 minutes.
