teamLab Borderless & Planets Tokyo: The Complete 2026 Guide

teamLab is one of the very few attractions in Tokyo where photographs fail to capture the reality of the experience. The Tokyo-based art collective creates room-scale environments where projection, light, sound, and visitor movement combine in real time — what you see changes every second and responds to your presence. There are two main venues in Tokyo in 2026, and choosing between them depends on how much time you have and what kind of experience you want.

teamLab Borderless: The Bigger World at Azabudai Hills

The original teamLab Borderless ran in Odaiba from 2018 to 2024 and attracted over nine million visitors before closing. The new Borderless reopened in February 2024 at Azabudai Hills in Minato, Tokyo — a major new development in central Tokyo that also houses the Mori JP Tower (currently Japan’s tallest building).

What’s Inside

The defining characteristic of Borderless is the absence of a fixed path. Rooms bleed into one another, walls and floors dissolve into continuous visual environments, and visitors wander freely rather than following a sequence.

Key installations in the current venue include:

• Forest of Resonating Lamps — A forest of crystal-ball lamps that respond to visitor presence, shifting colour and sound across the room in waves
• Continuous Life in the Infinite Universe — An evolving cosmos of life-forms that grow, branch, and decay across floor-to-ceiling projections
• Athletic Forest — A physical space with rope structures, balance beams, and climbing challenges embedded in shifting visual environments; requires a separate timed-entry booking within your visit
• Floating Flower Garden — A suspension of 10,000 orchids at eye level in a mirrored space that creates the effect of an infinite garden
• Future Park — An interactive zone where visitors create digital animals and fish that then appear in the main installation rooms

The venue also contains two cafés and a sake bar where drinks served within the space interact visually with the installation around you.

teamLab Planets opened in Toyosu in 2018 as a temporary exhibition and has remained open by popular demand. In 2025, the venue was extended until at least late 2027. It is smaller than Borderless — around 10 rooms over a single guided sequence — but many visitors find it the more powerful of the two.

What’s Inside

The sequence begins with water. Visitors remove shoes and socks at the entrance and descend into a room of shallow, ankle-deep water that reflects continuous flower projections blooming and falling across the ceiling. The water temperature is controlled; the light is intense.

From there, the route continues through:

• Floating in the Falling Universe of Flowers — The most-photographed installation: a mirrored room where the ceiling and floor dissolve into a single continuous field of blooming digital flowers that fall and regenerate in real time
• Universe of Water Particles on a Rock — A room-scale waterfall rendered in thousands of individual particle simulations; the physics responds to visitor presence
• The Table of Sky and Earth — An interactive dining space where food and drink appear to interact with seasonal nature imagery on the table surface (meals bookable separately)

If you only have half a day for digital art: Planets. If you have a full afternoon and want to get genuinely lost in something larger: Borderless. Both venues are within the same city — logistically you could visit both, though it makes for a heavy day.

Practical Tips for Both Venues

Timing

Weekday mornings are the quietest at both venues. The first entry slot of the day (9:00am at Planets, 10:00am at Borderless) consistently has the lowest crowds. Weekends, particularly during cherry blossom season (late March to mid-April) and autumn foliage (late October to November), are the busiest — book as far ahead as possible.

Avoid: School holiday periods in July and August — domestic visitor numbers spike sharply.

What to Wear

At Planets, wear or bring clothes suitable for wading. Skirts and wide-leg trousers create beautiful reflections in the water rooms; denim below the knee can be tricky. At Borderless, dress freely — the rooms are dark and movement-focused rather than particularly wet.

Avoid white clothing at both venues if you care about staining; the projection colours can sometimes land in unexpected ways.

Photography

Both venues explicitly permit photography. For the best shots:

• Planets water rooms: Crouch low for the reflection
• Borderless flower rooms: Stand still and wait for the art to move around you rather than chasing it
• Spheres installation: Touch the spheres and photograph the colour wave that propagates to adjacent balls

A phone camera is sufficient — there is no need for specialist equipment.

Crowds and Timing

Both venues use timed-entry tickets that allow a 30-minute check-in window, but once inside, there is no time limit. The first slot of the day is always the least crowded. In practice, the first 30 to 45 minutes of any slot is the lightest — visitors who arrive at the start of a time window tend to spread through the venue quickly.

Getting to Both Venues from Central Tokyo

From Shinjuku:

• Borderless (Azabudai Hills): Tokyo Metro Oedo Line to Roppongi, then 10-min walk or 1-stop to Kamiyacho → 30 min total
• Planets (Toyosu): Tokyo Metro Fukutoshin Line to Shibuya, change to Yurakucho Line to Toyosu → 40 min total

From Tokyo Station:
