teamLab Borderless Azabudai Hills: The Complete 2026 Visitor Guide

teamLab Borderless reopened in February 2024 at Azabudai Hills in Minato, Tokyo — a major new urban development that also contains Japan’s tallest building and the Mori JP Tower. The original Borderless ran in Odaiba from 2018 to 2024 and drew over nine million visitors before closing. The current venue is larger, more technically ambitious, and better connected to central Tokyo than its predecessor.

The defining experience at Borderless is the absence of any fixed path. Rooms flow into one another without defined endings. Light and sound cross boundaries. Visitors wander freely rather than following a sequence, and most people discover areas they missed only when checking other visitors’ photographs afterward.

Plan for at least two hours. Four is more realistic for a thorough visit.

What Makes Borderless Different from teamLab Planets

Both teamLab venues in Tokyo are worth visiting, but they deliver fundamentally different experiences.

teamLab Planets in Toyosu is compact and intense: a guided sequence of around ten rooms over 60 to 90 minutes, barefoot entry, water features, and a route that every visitor follows in the same order. The intimacy is part of the point.

teamLab Borderless is the opposite. There is no sequence, no defined order, and no single correct path through the venue. A floor plan is available but does not fully describe the connections between spaces. Visitors get genuinely lost, and the experience changes substantially based on which direction you explore from the entrance.

If you have time for only one venue: Planets is more immediately intense and takes less time. Borderless rewards those who have a full afternoon and want scale over sequence.

Key Installations at Borderless Azabudai

The installation lineup evolves. The following were active as of 2026, though specific rooms may change without notice.

Forest of Resonating Lamps

A forest of glass-ball lamps suspended from the ceiling at varying heights responds to visitor presence. When you approach a lamp, it brightens and shifts colour; that colour wave propagates through surrounding lamps and eventually fills the room. Multiple visitors in the room create overlapping waves that interact and compete.

The room runs dim to allow the lamps maximum visual contrast. It is one of the most photographed spaces in the venue and consistently crowded in the first two hours after opening.

Continuous Life in the Infinite Universe

Floor-to-ceiling projections across a large room depict an evolving ecosystem of digital life: organisms grow, branch, connect, decay, and regenerate across surfaces continuously. The room has no edge you can easily identify. Standing still for two or three minutes reveals cycles within cycles that a brief walk-through misses entirely.

Athletic Forest

A physically active section with rope structures, balance beams, climbing equipment, and stepping-stone paths embedded inside shifting visual environments. This section requires a separate timed-entry booking within your main visit — the Athletic Forest has its own time slots due to capacity limits. Book the Athletic Forest at the same time you book your main ticket.

Children above around age seven navigate this section independently. Adults who are comfortable with mild physical challenges find it genuinely engaging rather than merely decorative.

Floating Flower Garden

Approximately 10,000 live orchids are suspended at eye level throughout a mirrored room. The mirrors extend the apparent garden into apparent infinity in every direction. The sensors in the room detect visitors and cause the orchid canopy to rise overhead as you move through, creating a path through the suspended blooms.

This installation changes with the season: the orchid variety and colour palette shift across the year.

Future Park

An interactive zone designed with younger visitors in mind. Children and adults draw digital animals and fish using provided materials, which are then scanned and released into the main installation environments elsewhere in the venue, where they appear among the other projected life-forms. The interaction between created characters and the existing installation content means that what you created may appear in a room you visit later.

Sake and Tea Experience

Two in-venue beverage spaces offer drinks that appear to interact visually with the surrounding installations. The sake bar serves Japanese sake in cups where the drink’s surface reflects installation imagery. The tea room provides a quieter space to sit and observe. Neither is included in the base admission price; both serve as resting points mid-visit.

Tickets and Entry Fees

Adult ticket: Approximately 3,800 yen on weekdays, approximately 4,200 yen on weekends and public holidays as of 2026.

Child tickets: Reduced rates apply for children aged 4 to 12; children under 4 enter free.

Athletic Forest addon: Sometimes included in combo ticket options; confirm at booking. If it requires a separate timed entry, book this at the same time as your main ticket to secure your preferred session.

Opening Hours

Timed-entry slots are available in 30-minute arrival windows. There is no departure time: you can remain inside as long as you like after entry.

How to Book

Book at teamlab.art. The booking interface is available in English. Select your preferred date and arrival time, add the Athletic Forest timed-entry if you want it, and complete payment online. Tickets are digital and presented at entry.

When to book: Weekday tickets are typically available with one to two weeks’ notice. Weekend slots, particularly in cherry blossom season (late March to early May) and autumn (October to November), can sell out several weeks ahead. If you have specific travel dates, book as soon as they are confirmed.

Cancellations do release slots. If your preferred date shows as sold out, check again two or three days before your planned visit.

Getting to teamLab Borderless at Azabudai Hills

Azabudai Hills is a large mixed-use development with clear signage from surrounding transit points. The teamLab Borderless entrance is within the complex at the lower level.

By Subway

Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line — Kamiyacho station (Exit 3): A 5-minute walk through the Azabudai Hills underground connection. This is the most convenient option from Ginza, Tokyo Station, and central Tokyo.

• From Ginza: approximately 10 minutes on the Hibiya Line
• From Tokyo Station (Hibiya stop): approximately 20 minutes with one change at Kayabacho
• From Roppongi (Hibiya Line): one stop, approximately 3 minutes

Tokyo Metro Namboku Line — Roppongi-itchome station: Connected via a pedestrian walkway to Azabudai Hills. From Roppongi-itchome the walk takes approximately 10 minutes.

By Bus or Taxi

Taxis from Roppongi take approximately 5 minutes. From Shibuya or Shinjuku, allow 20 to 30 minutes depending on traffic. Taxis from Haneda Airport take approximately 40 minutes.

Several bus routes serve the Azabudai Hills stop directly from Shinjuku and Shibuya. Check the Azabudai Hills transit map for current routes.

Parking: Azabudai Hills has underground parking. Driving is possible but not recommended on weekends due to traffic around the complex.

What to Bring

• Comfortable shoes: Unlike teamLab Planets, Borderless does not require barefoot entry. You remain shod throughout. Comfortable walking shoes suited to uneven or low-light environments are ideal; high heels make the darker installation rooms more difficult to navigate.
• Charged phone: Photography and video are permitted throughout the venue without restrictions. No flash or tripods. Bring a portable charger if your battery runs low quickly, as you will likely spend several hours inside.
• Light layers: The interior rooms are air-conditioned and darker than ambient temperature suggests. A light jacket or cardigan is comfortable for an extended visit.
• Reusable bag: The complex has retail options within Azabudai Hills for after your visit. The Aman Tokyo hotel and surrounding restaurant level are worth exploring once you exit the teamLab space.

Best Time to Visit

Quietest: Weekday mornings, particularly the 10:00am first slot on Tuesday through Thursday. Arriving for the first entry of the day gives you a 15 to 20 minute window before the venue fills.

Insider Tips

Athletic Forest books out separately and fast. If you want it, book the Forest at the same time as your main ticket. Do not assume it will be available on arrival.

There is no wrong direction. Many visitors spend the first 10 minutes trying to identify the correct path through the venue. There is not one. Follow whatever draws your attention. You will circle back to things you missed, and spaces you rush through are worth revisiting with fewer people in them.

The sake bar mid-visit is a practical rest point. After 90 minutes of moving between dark rooms, sitting briefly in a lit environment recalibrates your eyes and energy. The bar is not just a commercial amenity; it functions as a useful pause point in the middle of a long visit.

The Azabudai Hills complex warrants time after your visit. The development includes the Azabudai Hills Market (a curated food hall), several restaurant floors, and the lower garden level with public art installations separate from the teamLab ticketed spaces. Budget at least an hour for the surrounding complex if you are not already familiar with it.

Photography in the Floating Flower Garden: Standing still and waiting for the orchid canopy to rise overhead produces more striking results than walking continuously through the room. The sensor response takes a second or two, so slow movement creates the fullest separation between visitor and suspended flowers.
