What’s at USJ: Zone by Zone

Super Nintendo World

Super Nintendo World, which opened in 2021, remains the most in-demand area of the park. The land is a faithful three-dimensional translation of the Mushroom Kingdom — Question Blocks, Piranha Plants, Goombas, and Yoshi-shaped hills rendered at full scale. It is architecturally impressive even if you do not plan to ride.

Mario Kart: Koopa’s Challenge is the anchor attraction — an augmented-reality ride using AR glasses in which riders sit in karts and score points by hitting targets during a lap around a Mario Kart course. Queue times regularly exceed 90 minutes on busy days.

Yoshi’s Adventure is a gentler family ride that circles the land at a slower pace, surveying the Mushroom Kingdom from above.

Power Up Band: USJ sells a wearable wristband (approximately ¥3,700 as of 2026) that connects to the Super Nintendo World app and allows riders to collect digital coins, trigger interactive elements throughout the land, and compete for high scores. It is optional but adds significantly to the experience for Nintendo fans.

Entry: Super Nintendo World requires a separate timed-entry pass (Area Timed Entry) on busy days. These are free but limited — collect one at the entrance the moment the park gates open. They typically run out within 20 to 30 minutes on peak days.

Wizarding World of Harry Potter

The Wizarding World occupies the park’s rear section and covers Hogsmeade village in impressive detail — Hogwarts castle, Ollivanders wand shop, Honeydukes, the Three Broomsticks restaurant, and the central attraction.

Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey is a motion-simulator ride through Hogwarts castle, combining physical sets with 3D screens. The pre-ride queue winds through Dumbledore’s office, Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom, and the Gryffindor common room — the theming is exceptional even in the queue itself.

Flight of the Hippogriff is an outdoor coaster in the grounds adjacent to Hagrid’s hut. Shorter, more accessible, and a solid view of the Wizarding World from above.

Butterbeer: Available in the standard, frozen, and hot variants (approximately ¥1,000 each as of 2026) at multiple kiosks across Hogsmeade. The frozen version is the most popular in summer.

No Express Pass required for Forbidden Journey on quiet days — but expect 60 to 80-minute queues on busy days. A single rider line is available and typically cuts wait times to 20 to 40 minutes.

The Flying Dinosaur and Jurassic World

The Flying Dinosaur is USJ’s top thrill ride — a flying coaster (riders face down horizontally) that swoops through a Jurassic landscape at high speed. Queue times reach 120 minutes on peak days. The single rider queue moves significantly faster.

Jurassic World: The Ride is a water ride with a steep drop finale — expect to get wet. Ponchos are sold throughout the park for approximately ¥400 to ¥600.

Hollywood Dream — The Ride

A classic backwards-or-forwards rollercoaster through a Hollywood-themed section of the park. The backwards version (with a slightly different queue) is the preferred variant for repeat visitors. Single Rider Lines

Several major attractions — Forbidden Journey, The Flying Dinosaur, Hollywood Dream — offer single rider queues that bypass a significant portion of the standard queue. Typical single rider waits are 20 to 40 minutes when standard queues are 80 to 120 minutes. Worth using if you are comfortable splitting from a companion for the duration of the ride.

Getting to USJ from Osaka

USJ is located in Sakurajima, western Osaka — straightforward to reach from any central Osaka location.

By JR: JR Yumesaki Line (also called the Sakurajima Line) from Namba (change at Osaka/Namba to JR Osaka loop line to Nishikujo, then Yumesaki Line to Universal City) — approximately 20 minutes from Osaka. Or direct from JR Osaka station via the loop line and Yumesaki Line — approximately 15 minutes. The Japan Rail Pass covers this journey.

By ferry: A boat connection from Osaka Kaiyukan (aquarium) to the USJ waterfront pier operates on selected days — a scenic option if you are combining USJ with a visit to the aquarium.

Three Broomsticks (Wizarding World): The most atmospheric sit-down option in the park — a large tavern serving roast chicken, corn-on-the-cob, and fish and chips in a Great Hall-style setting. Approximately ¥1,500 to ¥2,800 per meal. Queues build from noon; aim for 11am or after 2pm.

Super Nintendo World food zone: Mario-themed meals including Power-Up Mushroom Tiramisu and Koopa’s Challenge course sets. Novelty is the point — expect approximately ¥1,200 to ¥2,500 per item.

Park-wide: Standard theme park dining across multiple food courts and kiosks — burgers, ramen, takoyaki, and character bento sets. Budget approximately ¥1,500 to ¥3,000 per person for lunch.

Tip: Pack snacks from outside the park. USJ allows sealed drinks and small snacks to be brought in. This significantly reduces mid-day spend.
