Chitose Airport Transfer | The Japan Guides

New Chitose Airport (CTS) is Hokkaido’s main international gateway, handling flights from Tokyo, Osaka, and a growing number of direct international routes from South Korea, China, Taiwan, and Southeast Asia. The airport sits roughly 40 kilometres south of Sapporo city centre — close enough to reach quickly by train, but far enough that a poor transfer choice can add unnecessary time and cost to your arrival.

The JR Rapid Airport train is by far the fastest and most reliable option for most travellers. Buses serve a broader range of destinations, including ski resorts and onsen towns that are not on the rail line. Taxis and private transfers make sense for groups or late-night arrivals when public transport slows down. All prices below are approximate and current as of 2026.

JR Rapid Airport Train (Fastest Option to Sapporo)

The JR Hokkaido Rapid Airport service is the standard choice for reaching Sapporo. Trains run directly from Chitose Airport Station — connected to the domestic and international terminals via an underground walkway — to Sapporo Station.

Journey time: approximately 37 minutes to Sapporo Station
Fare (non-reserved car): approximately ¥1,150 one-way
Reserved car upgrade: approximately ¥840 extra — worth booking on busy weekend mornings and holidays
Frequency: trains run roughly every 15–20 minutes during the day

The train continues beyond Sapporo to Otaru (around 76 minutes from the airport, approximately ¥1,910). If you are heading to Otaru directly, there is no need to change at Sapporo.

IC cards — including Suica and Kitaca — are accepted at all fare gates. If you already have a Suica loaded with credit, tap in and tap out. The JR Hokkaido network is not covered by the standard JR Pass, but it is covered by the Hokkaido Rail Pass if you have one.

Winter note: the train runs underground between the airport and Sapporo and is unaffected by snow, which is a significant advantage over buses from October through April. Hokkaido winters can bring heavy snowfall and blizzard conditions that delay surface transport by an hour or more.

Airport Limousine Bus to Sapporo

Hokkaido Airport Shuttle buses, operated by Chuo Bus and Hokkaido Chuo Bus, connect the airport to Sapporo’s main hotels and bus terminals. Buses stop at key points including Sapporo Station Bus Terminal, Odori, and Susukino — covering more of the city than the train.

Journey time: approximately 70–90 minutes depending on traffic and stops
Fare: approximately ¥1,300 one-way (as of 2026)
Luggage: stored in the hold, so large bags are far easier to manage than on the train

Buses depart from designated bays in the arrivals area of both the domestic and international terminals. Tickets are available at the counter just past the baggage claim exit, or from machines in the arrivals hall. The Sapporo Station Bus Terminal is close to JR Sapporo Station, making onward connections straightforward.

The bus is a reasonable choice if your hotel is near a bus stop and you have heavy luggage. During the ski season (December through March), buses fill up quickly on weekend mornings — book at the counter or online in advance if your arrival is on a Friday or Saturday.

Buses to Niseko, Noboribetsu, and Beyond

New Chitose’s position in southern Hokkaido makes it a practical starting point for reaching ski resorts and onsen towns without routing through Sapporo.

To Niseko (Ski Region)

Express bus services connect the airport directly to Niseko, Kutchan, and Hirafu village, avoiding the Sapporo detour. During the ski season (roughly December to March), Hokkaido Resort Liner and other operators run dedicated services.

Journey time to Niseko: approximately 2 hours 30 minutes
Fare: approximately ¥2,800–¥3,200 one-way (as of 2026, varies by operator and season)

Book ahead for ski season — these services sell out on peak dates, particularly over Christmas and New Year.

To Noboribetsu Onsen

Buses connect the airport to Noboribetsu via the Tomamu interchange. Several operators run this route, with journey times around 60–80 minutes depending on the service.

Fare: approximately ¥2,000–¥2,500 one-way (as of 2026)

To Furano and Biei

No direct airport bus serves Furano. The fastest route is JR train to Sapporo, then the Furano-Lavender Express during summer, or regular services on the Furano Line. Journey time from the airport to Furano is approximately 2.5–3 hours total.

Taxi from New Chitose

Taxis are available from the designated taxi rank outside the arrivals halls of both terminals. A metered taxi to central Sapporo costs approximately ¥13,000–¥18,000 depending on the specific destination and traffic conditions. Journey time is approximately 55–75 minutes on the expressway.

Night surcharges (22:00–05:00) add roughly 20% to the metered fare. Expressway tolls are typically included in the metered amount, but confirm before departure.

For solo travellers or couples, the taxi is rarely the best value on this route given the efficiency of the train. The calculus changes for groups of three or four: at ¥13,000–¥18,000 split four ways, it becomes comparable to the train and far more convenient with heavy ski bags or large luggage.

Private Transfer from CTS

Pre-booked private transfers provide a fixed price and a driver waiting in the arrivals hall — eliminating the need to navigate taxi ranks or find your own transport after a long flight. This is the most practical option when travelling with children, arriving late at night, or carrying significant luggage such as ski equipment.

Private transfers from New Chitose to central Sapporo typically run approximately ¥10,000–¥18,000 depending on vehicle type and group size (as of 2026). Larger vehicles for families or groups cost proportionally more.

For Niseko and other resort areas further south and west of Sapporo, expect private transfer prices of approximately ¥20,000–¥40,000 depending on distance and vehicle.

Book your transfer in advance, particularly during peak ski season (late December to March), when demand for road transport is highest and last-minute bookings become difficult.

Luggage Forwarding (Takkyubin)

Hokkaido is one of Japan’s heaviest-luggage destinations — ski gear, snowboards, and outdoor equipment make for awkward public transport. The takkyubin luggage forwarding service (operated by Yamato Transport and others) is available at the airport and can deliver bags to most Hokkaido hotels and ski resorts within one to two days.

For same-day arrivals, you can send bags ahead before your trip using the service at your Tokyo or Osaka hotel. This leaves you free to use the Rapid Airport train unencumbered and collect your luggage at your Sapporo hotel on arrival.

Which Option Is Right for You?

Train (Rapid Airport): best choice for most travellers heading to Sapporo city. Fast, reliable, unaffected by winter weather, and cheap. Take the reserved car if travelling during peak hours.

Bus to Sapporo: useful if your hotel is near a bus stop and you have multiple large bags. Slower than the train but handles luggage more easily.

Direct bus to Niseko or Noboribetsu: skip Sapporo entirely if your final destination is a resort or onsen town on the bus network. Book in advance during ski season.

Private transfer: the right call for families with children, groups with ski equipment, or anyone arriving after midnight when train and bus frequency drops and finding a taxi becomes less certain.
