Japan Rail Pass Prices Rise 5–6% From October 2026
JR Group officially announced on 9 April 2026 that the Japan Rail Pass will increase in price by approximately 5–6% from 1 October 2026. This is the first price adjustment for the pass in three years and affects all pass types sold through overseas agents. Travellers booking Japan trips for later in 2026 should buy before the cut-off date to secure the current rates.
New prices from October 2026
The increases affect all standard Japan Rail Pass categories. Prices below are for adult ordinary car (non-reserved seats available):

Green Car (first class) and children’s passes increase by similar proportions. The JR Group website is keeping current prices in place for a limited period after October 1 for direct purchases, but most travellers buy through overseas agents where the new rates will apply immediately.
Why prices are going up
JR East raised its domestic fares by an average of 7.1% in March 2026, and other JR companies followed suit. The Rail Pass increase brings its pricing closer to alignment with the higher underlying cost of travel on the JR network. The pass has historically offered significant savings for travellers doing multi-city itineraries, and it continues to do so — but the gap between pass cost and individual ticket prices narrows slightly with this revision.
Which travellers are most affected

For a two-week itinerary including Hiroshima, Kanazawa, or northern Honshu, the 14-day pass continues to be the most cost-effective option.
