Getting Around Matsushima: Trains, Boats, and Transport Guide

Matsushima is one of Japan’s three canonical scenic views (Nihon Sankei), a bay scattered with 260-plus pine-covered islands whose silhouettes have been celebrated in poetry and painting since the 17th century. It sits 40 minutes from Sendai by train and is a natural day-trip addition to any Tohoku itinerary — the compact bay area means most of the sights are reachable on foot once you arrive.

Getting to Matsushima from Sendai

JR Senseki Line (recommended)

The Senseki Line connects Sendai to Matsushima-Kaigan Station, the most convenient arrival point for visitors.

Important distinction: These are two different stations.

• Matsushima-Kaigan (Senseki Line) — exits directly to the bay waterfront, the boat cruise pier, and the main tourist area. Use this station.
• Matsushima (JR Tohoku Line) — closer to Zuiganji Temple but a 25-minute walk from the bay. Useful for visiting Zuiganji first before walking down to the coast.

The JR Pass covers both routes.

From Tokyo: Take the Tohoku Shinkansen from Tokyo to Sendai (1 hour 30 minutes, ¥13,870 as of 2026), then connect to the Senseki Line. Matsushima works well as a stop between Tokyo and further Tohoku destinations.

Matsushima Bay Cruise

The island cruise is the defining Matsushima experience and highly recommended even for visitors short on time.

Operators:

• Matsushima Pleasure Cruise (松島観光汽船): The main operator, running the Standard Course and multiple route options.
• Matsushima Cruise (松島汽船): Similar route at comparable prices.

Standard Course:

• Duration: approximately 50 minutes
• Fare: approximately ¥1,500 per adult as of 2026
• Departures: approximately every 30 minutes during peak season (check seasonal timetables)
• Includes: looped cruise through the main island groups with commentary

50-min Shiogama Course: Some boats run between Matsushima Pier and Shiogama Port (one-way, approximately 50 minutes). This allows a one-way journey — arrive by train, cruise to Shiogama (a port town with a fish market), then train back to Sendai. Fare approximately ¥1,500 one-way.

Tickets are sold at the pier counter (cash or card) — not bookable online in advance for most standard departures. IC cards are generally not accepted at cruise counters.

Alternative Viewpoints Around the Bay

For elevated views over the island landscape, several hilltop panorama spots require a short walk or taxi from the station area:

• Saigantei (西行戻しの松公園): The classic elevated view over Matsushima Bay. Approximately 15-minute walk from Matsushima-Kaigan Station, uphill.
• Otakamori Viewpoint: A further hilltop, approximately 20 minutes from the station on foot.
• Tomiyama Viewpoint: Accessible by road — taxi recommended (approximately ¥1,000 from station).

Cycling

Cycling the Matsushima bay area is pleasant on the flat waterfront road. The terrain is gentle except for the hilltop viewpoints (which most cyclists walk up).

• Near Matsushima-Kaigan Station: Several shops offer standard bikes at approximately ¥300–¥500 per hour or ¥1,200–¥1,500 per day.

Buses

The Miyagi Kotsu bus network connects Matsushima with Sendai and the wider Miyagi area, but trains are faster for the Sendai connection. Buses are useful for:

• Matsushima → Shiogama: Approximately 25 minutes by bus, ¥570 as of 2026.
• Matsushima → Ishinomaki: Approximately 1 hour by bus from Matsushima-Kaigan Station — useful for connecting to the Sanriku coast reconstruction areas.

Taxis

Taxis are available at Matsushima-Kaigan Station (small rank outside the exit) and can be called by phone. Useful for:

• Reaching the hilltop viewpoints (Tomiyama, Kanrantei area) without a steep walk
• Getting between Matsushima Station and Matsushima-Kaigan Station (approximately ¥1,000)
• Early morning arrival or late departure when trains are infrequent

Most visitors arrive from Sendai on a day trip. The following timing works well:

• Afternoon (12:30–15:00): Godaido, Fukuura Island, waterfront promenade, oyster lunch
• Return: Train from Matsushima-Kaigan (trains every 30 minutes; last train around 22:30)

Transport essentials for Matsushima: The Japan Rail Pass covers the Senseki Line from Sendai and the Tohoku Shinkansen from Tokyo — Matsushima adds little extra cost on a multi-city pass itinerary.
