How close is Fukuoka Airport to the city centre?

Fukuoka Airport (FUK) is the closest major airport to a Japanese city centre. The Fukuoka City Subway covers the main visitor corridors, Nishitetsu trains and buses radiate out to the broader city and Dazaifu, and crucially, the airport is so close to the centre that the commute many visitors dread in other Japanese cities is barely an inconvenience here.

The two names to know are Hakata (the traditional commercial district around the main station) and Tenjin (the modern shopping and entertainment hub 10 minutes away). Most travel oscillates between these two points.

Fukuoka City Subway (地下鉄)

The Fukuoka City Subway operates three lines:

Kuko Line (空港線, red) - The most important line for visitors. Runs from Fukuoka Airport (Kuko) through Hakata Station and Tenjin, continuing west to Meinohama and Nishi-Jinroku. This single line connects the airport, the JR hub, and the main shopping district in a straight shot. Journey time airport to Hakata: 5 minutes (¥260). Hakata to Tenjin: 6 minutes (¥210).

Hakozaki Line (箱崎線, blue) - Branches north-east from Nakasukawabata station on the Kuko Line, serving Hakozaki Miyama (near Hakozaki Shrine) and Kaizuka. Less useful for most tourists.

Nanakuma Line (七隈線, green) - Runs south from Tenjin-Minami through residential areas to Hashimoto. Extended to Hakata Station in 2023. Now useful as an alternative connection between Tenjin and Hakata via a different underground corridor.

Nishitetsu (西鉄) Trains and Buses

Nishitetsu is a major private rail and bus operator that handles much of the city outside the subway catchment area.

Nishitetsu Tenjin Omuta Line - From Nishitetsu-Fukuoka (Tenjin) Station, this is the key line for:

Dazaifu - Change at Futsukaichi for the Dazaifu Line. Total 35 minutes, ¥420.
Kurume - 32 minutes on the Express, ¥820.

Nishitetsu Buses - Cover extensive city routes including areas not served by the subway. Single fares from ¥150. Nimoca and Suica IC cards accepted. Buses run frequently but can be slow during rush hour in congested areas.

The Dazaifu Liner Bus - A direct tourist bus from Tenjin bus centre to Dazaifu (no transfer required). About 40 minutes. Useful if you have luggage or prefer not to navigate the train change.

JR Trains

Hakata Station is the primary JR hub for Fukuoka and serves as a Shinkansen terminus for Kyushu.

JR Pass holders note: The Nozomi and Mizuho Shinkansen are not covered by the standard JR Pass - use the Sakura or Hikari instead. Journey to Hiroshima via Sakura: approximately 1 hour.

IC Cards and Nimoca

Fukuoka’s local IC card is Nimoca (issued by Nishitetsu). It works on Fukuoka City Subway, Nishitetsu trains and buses, and many other transport operators across Kyushu. You can use it across Japan for trains and convenience stores just like Suica.

If you already have a Suica, ICOCA, or Pasmo from another city, there is no need to buy a Nimoca - all of these work identically on every Fukuoka transport network. Top up at any subway or JR ticket machine.

Airport Connection

Fukuoka Airport (FUK) is the great transport advantage of this city. The domestic terminal is just 5–6 minutes from Hakata by subway.

Fukuoka City Subway Kuko Line - Domestic Terminal to Hakata: 5 minutes, ¥260. To Tenjin: 11 minutes, ¥260. Trains run every 3–6 minutes during peak hours.
International Terminal Shuttle Bus - Free shuttle between domestic and international terminals every 5 minutes (approximately 10-minute ride).
Taxi from Domestic Terminal - Approximately ¥1,000–¥1,400 to Hakata, ¥1,500–¥2,000 to Tenjin. The subway is almost always faster and much cheaper.

Fukuoka taxis are metered and widely available around Hakata Station, Tenjin, and Nakasu.
