Getting Around Nara: Trains, Buses, and Walking Guide

Nara is one of Japan’s most accessible day-trip destinations — and one of the few places where the most important advice for getting around is simply to walk. The concentration of temples, shrines, and deer-filled parkland around Nara Park means that for most visitors, the essential sights are all within a 30-minute radius on foot from Kintetsu Nara Station. For the outer temples and suburbs, buses and JR trains fill the gaps.

The Two Nara Stations

Nara has two separate railway stations, served by different companies, and knowing which one to use saves confusion on arrival.

Kintetsu Nara Station (Kintetsu Nara Line) is located slightly closer to Nara Park and is the more convenient arrival point for visitors coming from Osaka Namba or Kyoto. The station sits underground; from the exit, Nara Park and Kofuku-ji are approximately 5 minutes on foot, and Todai-ji’s Nandaimon gate is about 20 minutes on foot.

JR Nara Station (JR Yamatoji Line) serves visitors arriving from Osaka Tennoji or JR Pass holders. It is about 800m west of Kintetsu Nara — still walkable to Nara Park in around 20–25 minutes. JR Nara Station is also the departure point for the JR loop bus and the main Nara Kotsu city buses heading to outer temples.

Arriving from Osaka and Kyoto

Kintetsu trains are generally faster and more frequent for the Osaka Namba and Kyoto connections. JR Pass holders should use the JR Nara Line from Kyoto or the Yamatoji Line from Osaka Tennoji.

Nara Kotsu City Buses

For visitors who want to reach sights beyond Nara Park — particularly Toshodai-ji, Yakushi-ji, and Horyu-ji — the Nara Kotsu bus network is the practical option. Most relevant services depart from the bus bays directly in front of JR Nara Station or from the Kintetsu Nara Station bus stops.

Key routes:

• Route 70 (Horyu-ji direction): JR Nara Station → Yakushi-ji → Toshodai-ji → Horyu-ji. Journey to Horyu-ji approximately 55–60 minutes, ¥760 (as of 2026).
• Route 2 (Kasugayama/Nara Park loop): Runs from both stations through Nara Park, past Kasuga Taisha, and towards Shin-Yakushiji-mae. Fare approximately ¥220–¥280.
• Nara Park Area Bus (loop shuttle): A shorter loop connecting the two stations via the park, running during busy tourist periods. Flat fare ¥100–¥210.

IC cards (Suica, ICOCA, etc.) are accepted on all Nara Kotsu buses. Board at the rear door; alight at the front and tap out on IC card readers. Day passes are available for ¥600 (covering the core city bus routes) — worth buying if you plan to visit three or more bus-served destinations in a day.

Walking

Walking is unambiguously the best way to see central Nara. The main tourist corridor from Kintetsu Nara Station through Nara Park to Kasuga Taisha covers about 2.5km and is flat to gently uphill. Estimated walk times from Kintetsu Nara Station:

• Kofuku-ji Five-Storey Pagoda: 5 minutes
• Nara National Museum: 12 minutes
• Todai-ji Nandaimon Gate: 20 minutes
• Todai-ji Great Buddha Hall: 25 minutes
• Kasuga Taisha: 35 minutes
• Nigatsudo Hall (Todai-ji): 30 minutes

The deer are essentially everywhere in this zone. Stay on paved paths to avoid muddy detours.

IC Cards

Suica, ICOCA, Pasmo, and other national IC cards work on all JR trains, Kintetsu trains, and city buses in Nara. There is no Nara-specific card — your existing card from Tokyo or Osaka works perfectly. Top up at JR Nara Station or Kintetsu Nara Station machines.

For navigation and real-time transit lookups, a Japanese data SIM or pocket WiFi keeps things simple. Japan SIM options are available for pickup or delivery before your trip.

Cycling

Nara’s flat central area and quieter back streets around Nara Park make cycling a pleasant option. The terrain is gentle compared to most Japanese cities, though some routes towards outer temples involve longer distances.

Rental shops are clustered near both stations, offering city bikes from approximately ¥1,000–¥1,500 per day, typically from 08:00–17:00. E-bikes are available from around ¥2,000.

Cycling is not permitted inside the deer zones of Nara Park itself — lock up at designated racks at the park perimeter.

Taxis

Taxis rank at both JR Nara and Kintetsu Nara stations.

Approximate fares (as of 2026):

• Kintetsu Nara Station to Todai-ji entrance: ¥700–¥900
• Kintetsu Nara Station to Kasuga Taisha: ¥1,000–¥1,300
• JR Nara Station to Horyu-ji: approximately ¥4,000–¥5,000 (buses are far cheaper)

Taxis are practical for early morning arrivals before buses run, or for travellers with luggage. The GO app operates in Nara for pre-booked rides with estimated fares. Late-night surcharge (22:00–05:00): +20%.

Getting to Outer Temples (Horyu-ji, Yakushi-ji, Toshodai-ji)

These UNESCO World Heritage temples sit 5–12km west of central Nara and require a bus or short JR trip.

Horyu-ji (the world’s oldest surviving wooden structures):

• JR: JR Yamatoji Line from JR Nara Station to Horyuji Station, approximately 10 minutes, ¥220. Then bus or 20-minute walk to the temple.
• Bus: Nara Kotsu route 70 from JR Nara Station, approximately 55–60 minutes, ¥760.
• JR Pass holders will find the JR option by far the best value.

Yakushi-ji and Toshodai-ji:

• Take the Kintetsu Kashihara Line from Kintetsu Nara Station (or the Yamato-Saidaiji interchange, one stop away) to Nishinokyo Station. Approximately 15–20 minutes, ¥290. Both temples are a short walk from the station.

For airport arrivals or departures at Osaka Kansai International Airport, Kiwitaxi offers fixed-price transfers to/from Nara — useful for travellers with luggage who don’t want to navigate multiple train changes.

Day Trip Connections

Nara is primarily a destination from Osaka and Kyoto rather than a base for onward trips, but several half-day excursions are possible.

Yoshino, famous for its mountain cherry blossoms in late March/early April, is easily reachable as a half-day trip from Nara via direct Kintetsu express.
