Matsuyama is Shikoku’s largest city, anchored by Japan’s oldest continuously operating hot spring (Dogo Onsen) and one of the country’s few original 12 surviving feudal castles. The Iyo Railway tram network is the city’s practical spine - a compact, frequent service connecting the main sights with the reliability of a metro.
Getting to Matsuyama
By Ferry from Hiroshima (recommended)
The ferry route across the Seto Inland Sea is the classic approach from western Honshu.

Hiroshima ferries depart from Hiroshima Port (宇品港). Take the #1 city bus from Hiroshima Station (Bus Center) to Hiroshima Port in approximately 25 minutes. Matsuyama arrivals dock at Matsuyama Kanko Port (松山観光港), from where shuttle buses run to Matsuyama-shi Station in approximately 30 minutes (¥420 as of 2026).
Note: The Hiroshima ferry is not covered by the JR Pass.

JR Pass covers all Yosan Line limited express fares. JR Matsuyama Station is in the city centre - the Iyo Railway (Iyotetsu) tram operates separately and requires separate fares.

Iyo Railway (Iyotetsu) City Trams
The Iyo Railway tram network is the primary way to move around Matsuyama. Three interlinked tram lines connect JR Matsuyama Station, the city centre (Okaido/Kencho), Matsuyama Castle base, and Dogo Onsen.

1-Day Tram Pass
Matsuyama City Tram 1-Day Pass: Approximately ¥700 as of 2026. Covers unlimited rides on all Iyotetsu tram lines within the city. Available at Matsuyama-eki-mae tram stop, Matsuyama-shi Station information desk, and from tram drivers.
For a day including Dogo Onsen (return tram), Matsuyama Castle (tram to Kencho-mae), and the Okaido shopping district, the pass covers approximately 4 tram rides and pays for itself.
Matsuyama Castle
The castle sits atop Shiroyama hill, 132m above the city. Two access options from the tram:
Ropeway
- Base station: 10-minute walk from Kencho-mae tram stop (follow signs up the hill)
- Journey time: Approximately 2 minutes
- Hours: 09:00–17:00 (last ascent 16:30; seasonal variation)

Chairlift
A chairlift operates in parallel with the ropeway at the same base station, for the same fare. More scenic than the enclosed gondola, but exposed to weather.
Walking Route
A signed footpath ascends from the ropeway/chairlift base to the castle keep in approximately 20 minutes. Free.
Dogo Onsen District
Dogo Onsen is approximately 2.5km from Matsuyama-shi Station, easily reached by tram. The Dogo Onsen Honkan (道後温泉本館) is the centrepiece - a three-storey bathhouse built in 1894 and one of Japan’s most photographed buildings. It underwent renovation works in 2019–2024; confirm current opening status and entry procedures at the tourism desk.

The Dogo Onsen shopping arcade extends from the tram terminal - 250m of souvenir shops and snack stalls, best explored before or after bathing.
City Buses
Iyotetsu Bus operates routes covering areas the tram doesn’t reach, including:
- Matsuyama Airport: Limousine buses from the airport to Matsuyama-shi Station take approximately 15 minutes and cost approximately ¥300 as of 2026.
- Ishite-ji Temple (Temple 51 on Shikoku Pilgrimage): About 15 minutes by bus from Dogo Onsen.
- Matsuyama Kanko Port (ferry terminal): Shuttle bus to Matsuyama-shi Station approximately 30 minutes, ¥420.
Cycling
The flat areas between Matsuyama-shi Station and the city centre are cyclable. Dogo Onsen is an easy 20-minute cycle from the centre.
Rental options:
- Matsuyama-shi Station area: Cycle rental shops near the station offer standard bikes at approximately ¥1,000–¥1,200 per day, e-bikes at approximately ¥2,000–¥2,500.
- Some hotels near Dogo Onsen include bicycles for guests.

Transport essentials for Matsuyama: The Japan Rail Pass covers the Yosan Line limited expresses from Okayama and Takamatsu - Matsuyama is the western anchor of the JR Shikoku network. For the popular Hiroshima ferry approach, the ferry fare is paid separately (not JR Pass). For fixed-rate airport or port transfers, Kiwitaxi is available in Ehime Prefecture.
