Getting Around Hakodate: Trams, Buses, and Transport Guide

Hakodate is Hokkaido’s most historically layered city — a former treaty port with Western-influenced hilltop churches, a distinctive star-shaped Goryokaku fort, and Japan’s most acclaimed morning seafood market. Its vintage tram network is both a practical transport tool and one of the city’s signature experiences, running along the waterfront and into the Motomachi historical district.

Getting to Hakodate

Hokkaido Shinkansen (from Tokyo)

The Hokkaido Shinkansen connects Tokyo with Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto, the nearest Shinkansen station to Hakodate. From Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto, a connecting express train (Hakodate Liner) reaches Hakodate Station in approximately 18 minutes.

The JR Pass covers all fares above, including the Hakodate Liner connection. Note: Sapporo-to-Hakodate currently has no Shinkansen — the Hokkaido Shinkansen extension to Sapporo is under construction.

The Hakodate City Tram (Shiden)

The tram is the most useful transport tool for sightseers. It runs two routes:

• Line 2 (湯の川線): Hakodate Station → Jujigai → Ropeway-mae → Jujigai → Yunokawa (the main useful line for visitors)
• Line 5 (本線): Hakodate Station → Jujigai → Yachigashira

The two lines share track between Hakodate Station and Jujigai. At Jujigai, they diverge — Line 2 continues up toward Motomachi, Line 5 heads south to Yachigashira.

How to ride: Board from the rear door. Take a numbered ticket from the machine by the rear door. Pay the indicated fare into the fare box at the front on exit. Standard single fare: approximately ¥250 as of 2026 (flat rate across all stops).

1-Day Tram Pass

The Hakodate City Transport 1-Day Pass covers unlimited rides on both tram lines and on city bus routes operated by Hakodate City Transport. Cost: approximately ¥700 as of 2026. Available at:

• Hakodate Station (tourist information counter)
• Major tram stop kiosks
• Hakodate Airport

For most sightseeing days covering the morning market → Motomachi → Kanemori → ropeway, the pass pays for itself in three or four rides.

Buses

The bus network covers areas the tram doesn’t reach, most notably:

• Goryokaku: Buses from Hakodate Station reach the Goryokaku Tower area (direct bus stop) in approximately 15 minutes. The tram stop at Goryokaku-koen-mae requires a 15-minute walk to the tower — the bus is faster.
• Trappistine Convent: In the Yunokawa area, approximately 20 minutes by bus from Hakodate Station. Not on the tram route.
• Onuma Quasi-National Park: Bus services from Hakodate Station, though the JR train (15 minutes to Onuma-koen Station) is faster and more convenient.

Standard bus fare starts at approximately ¥220 for short journeys and increases with distance.

Mt Hakodate Ropeway

The Hakodate Ropeway (函館山ロープウェイ) is the main access point for the famous 334m summit viewpoint, known for one of Japan’s best city night views.

• Lower station: 5-minute walk from the Ropeway-mae tram stop
• Journey time: 3 minutes each way
• Operating hours: Approximately 10:00–22:00 (peak season); reduced hours November–March
• Fares (approx, 2026): ¥1,200 one-way adult / ¥2,000 return
• Peak crowds: Sunset and 21:00–22:00 are the busiest times. Aim for 20:30–21:00 if you want the night view with manageable queues.

A mountain bus also ascends from the Jujigai area (April–November only, not running in winter).

IC Cards

Suica, Pasmo, ICOCA, and Kitaca (JR Hokkaido’s IC card) all work on Hakodate City trams and buses. Load or top up at JR vending machines at Hakodate Station.

Kitaca is the practical choice if you’re spending significant time in Hokkaido — obtainable at Sapporo or Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto stations. All national IC cards are interoperable in Hakodate.

Cycling

Hakodate’s waterfront, Kanemori warehouse area, and the flat zone around Goryokaku are well-suited to cycling. The Motomachi district involves some steep hills — acceptable for a short push but not comfortable for longer distances.

Rental options:

• Hakodate Station area: Several rental shops near the station offer standard city bikes at approximately ¥1,000–¥1,200 per day. E-bikes (suitable for the Motomachi hills) are available at approximately ¥2,000–¥2,500 per day.
• Some tourist hotels offer complimentary guest bicycles.

The cycling route from Hakodate Station south along the waterfront to Kanemori and then into the Motomachi neighbourhood takes approximately 20–30 minutes and covers most visitor highlights.

Taxis

Taxis queue outside Hakodate Station (east side). They are practical for late evenings after the tram stops running (last tram around 22:30) and for reaching sights between tram and bus routes.

Transport essentials for Hakodate: The Japan Rail Pass covers the Hokkaido Shinkansen from Tokyo and the JR Hokuto express from Sapporo — Hakodate is the most accessible Hokkaido city on a JR Pass itinerary.
