Is one day enough for Hiroshima and Miyajima? It is enough to see the main sights without feeling completely rushed. Two days allows for a more reflective visit to the Peace Memorial Museum, more time on Miyajima, and dinner in Hiroshima (the okonomiyaki here — layered, Hiroshima-style — is significantly different from Osaka-style and worth having). If you have the time, stay overnight.

What is the best time of year to visit Miyajima? Autumn (November) brings koyo (autumn foliage) to Mt Misen and is very beautiful but very crowded. Spring (late March to early April) has cherry blossoms. Summer (July–August) is hot and humid but the island is lush. January–February is the quietest period. The torii gate is photogenic year-round.

Is the Peace Memorial Museum appropriate for children? The museum does not shy away from the physical effects of the bombing — there are photographs, physical artefacts (including human remains from the blast), and personal testimonies. Older children (12+) generally respond thoughtfully. For younger children, the park and the paper crane monument tell the story in a gentler way. The museum has a dedicated children’s wing that is less graphic.

Can I get to Hiroshima without a JR Pass? Yes. Shinkansen tickets can be purchased individually at the station. The one-way Hikari fare from Kyoto is approximately ¥11,000 (USD 73); round-trip is approximately ¥22,000 (USD 147). If you are only making this one Shinkansen trip, the math may favour individual tickets over a full JR Pass — compare your entire itinerary.

Are there Hiroshima oysters on Miyajima? Yes. Several restaurants near the ferry pier on Miyajima serve grilled oysters, oyster curry, and oyster rice. Expect to pay approximately ¥500–¥800 (USD 3–5) per oyster. They are large — the Hiroshima variety is known for it.
