Japan's Kurobe-Unazuki Canyon Route Opens to Visitors

Autumn foliage in the Japanese Alps in October

A new alpine passage through the Kurobe Gorge in Toyama Prefecture opened to general visitors on 2 October 2026, marking one of the most significant expansions of mountain tourism access in Japan in recent years. The Kurobe-Unazuki Canyon Route uses tunnels previously restricted to maintenance personnel of Kansai Electric Power Company (Kanden), opening a 18-km alpine corridor that had been inaccessible to the public for decades.

The route connects the Kurobe Dam end of the existing Tateyama-Kurobe Alpine Route with Unazuki Onsen and the Kurobe Gorge Railway in Toyama, creating a through-connection between two previously separate mountain tourism circuits.

What the Route Involves

The canyon route passes through a combination of underground maintenance tunnels, elevated walkways above the gorge, and open-air sections with views into the Kurobe River valley below. The full crossing takes approximately three to four hours one-way and is currently operated as a guided tour - Kanden manages access, and bookings are required in advance.

Highlights include interior sections of the Kurobe Dam infrastructure not accessible on the standard Tateyama-Kurobe route, and the gorge views from the elevated canyon sections, which are unlike anything available on existing public routes.

Autumn Timing

October and early November are expected to be peak season for the route. Autumn foliage in the Kurobe Gorge turns intensely red and gold through this period, and the combination of canyon scenery with industrial engineering - dams, tunnels, power-generation works - and raw mountain colour is distinctive. The route is seasonal and closes for winter in mid-November when snow conditions make access unsafe.

Advance booking slots have reportedly sold out quickly for October weekends; weekday departures may have more availability.

Getting There

The west entry point at Kurobe Dam is reached via the standard Tateyama-Kurobe Alpine Route from either Nagano (via Omachi) or Toyama. The east entry at Unazuki Onsen is accessible by Toyama Chiho Railway from Toyama city.

See our Japan rail pass guide for pass options that cover the connecting services, and our Japan in October guide for conditions and planning across the country during the autumn season. For those building a broader autumn foliage itinerary through central Japan, see our Japan autumn foliage itinerary.

The Nagano area makes a logical base for the western approach and combines well with visits to Matsumoto Castle and the Kamikochi valley.
