Getting Around Sendai: Subway, Loople Bus, and Transport Guide

Sendai is the largest city in Tohoku — the northern region of Honshu — and serves as the main gateway for exploring the region’s temples, hot springs, and coastal scenery. The city itself is relatively compact, with two subway lines handling most commuter and tourist movement, and a purpose-built tourist bus route connecting the main landmarks. Sendai is also a shinkansen hub, making it an efficient base for day trips throughout Tohoku.

Sendai City Subway

The Sendai City Subway operates two lines, both accepting IC cards and integrating into the national transport network.

Nanboku Line (南北線) — The primary north–south axis running from Izumi-Chuo in the north through Sendai Station to Tomizawa in the south. This line handles the bulk of city movement and connects to the main shopping and entertainment districts.

Tozai Line (東西線) — The east–west line running from Yagiyama Zoological Park in the west through Sendai Station to Arai in the east. For visitors, the western section is most relevant — Aoba-jo-mae station is the closest subway stop for Sendai Castle ruins and Aoba Park.

Available from ticket machines at any subway station. A sensible choice on days focused on the Tozai Line sights (castle, then back to Sendai Station, then an evening in Ichiban-cho easily runs to four journeys).

Loople Sendai Tourist Bus

The Loople Sendai is a dedicated sightseeing bus service running a circular route from Sendai Station West Exit, linking the city’s main tourist attractions. It runs roughly every 20–30 minutes from approximately 09:00 to 16:00 (seasonal variation — reduced service January to March).

Combined Loople + subway 1-day passes are also available (approximately ¥900), covering unlimited use of both systems. Buy from the Sendai City Tourist Information Centre at Sendai Station West Exit.

JR Trains

Sendai Station is on the Tohoku Shinkansen line, connecting north to Morioka and Aomori and south to Tokyo.

JR Pass holders can use all shinkansen services except the fastest Hayabusa trains on the Tokyo–Sendai–Morioka corridor (JR Pass covers Hayabusa on this route — a useful exception to the usual Nozomi/Hayabusa exclusion rule).

• JR Senzan Line — To Yamadera Temple (60 min, ¥860 from Sendai)

IC Cards

The local IC card for Sendai is icsca, but any national IC card — Suica, ICOCA, Pasmo, Kitaca — works on the subway, JR local trains, and city buses. There is no reason to obtain an icsca if you are already carrying another card.

Top up at any subway or JR station machine at Sendai Station. For navigation and real-time transit lookups across Tohoku, a Japanese data SIM is recommended — Japan SIM options can be delivered before you travel.

Airport Connection

Sendai Airport (SDJ) is connected to Sendai Station by the Sendai Airport Access Line — one of the most convenient airport rail links in Japan’s regional cities.

• Sendai Airport Access Line: Airport to Sendai Station, approximately 25 minutes, approximately ¥660 (as of 2026). Runs roughly every 15–30 minutes.
• Taxi: Approximately ¥5,000–¥7,000 to central Sendai. Not recommended when the train is this straightforward.

Taxis

Taxis rank at Sendai Station East and West exits, and can be flagged throughout the city.

Cycling

Sendai’s flat central grid — the Jozenji-dori and Aoba-dori tree-lined boulevards — is pleasant by bicycle. The city has dedicated cycle lanes on some central streets, though coverage is less comprehensive than Kyoto or Hiroshima.

The Sendai Bicycle Share (DATE BIKE) operates docked stations around Sendai Station, Ichiban-cho, and the Tozai Line corridor:
