Despite the rural setting, the town has a well-developed sightseeing bus network designed specifically for visitors - the Retro Bus routes make it straightforward to reach the main viewpoints without a car.
Getting to Kawaguchiko from Tokyo
By Train (Fuji Excursion or JR + Fujikyu)
The Fuji Excursion (富士回遊) is a through-service limited express running directly from Shinjuku to Kawaguchiko without changing trains.

Lake Kawaguchi Cruise
A short sightseeing cruise operates on Lake Kawaguchi, offering views of Mount Fuji from the water on clear days.

Suica, Pasmo, and ICOCA work on Fujikyu Bus Retro Bus routes and on JR trains on the Chuo Line to Otsuki. However, the Fujikyu Railway (Otsuki to Kawaguchiko) requires a separate ticket purchase - it does not accept standard national IC cards at stations, though some services may accept them on board.
For simplicity, buy a Kawaguchiko Retro Bus pass on arrival rather than trying to use IC cards individually on each ride.
Cycling
Cycling is arguably the best way to experience Lake Kawaguchi and is strongly recommended for visitors staying one or more nights.
The lakeside circuit: The cycling path around Lake Kawaguchi is approximately 20km, largely flat, and takes 1–2 hours depending on stops. The views of Mount Fuji across the lake - particularly from the northern shore at Oishi Park - are exceptional.

Taxis
Taxis queue at Kawaguchiko Station. The limited Retro Bus frequency (every 20–30 minutes) makes taxis useful for specific sight-to-sight transfers, particularly in off-peak seasons when buses are infrequent.

The Chureito Pagoda - the famous pagoda-and-Fuji photograph - is accessible from Fujisan Station on the Fujikyu Railway (10-minute walk, then 397 steps to the pagoda).
Transport essentials for Kawaguchiko: The Japan Rail Pass covers the JR Chuo Line to Otsuki but not the Fujikyu Railway - budget ¥1,540 each way for the Fujikyu leg, or take the highway bus from Shinjuku instead.
