JR Kyushu has confirmed that full Shinkansen service on the Kyushu line will resume on 18 September 2026, ending a period of reduced operations that affected services between Hakata (Fukuoka) and Kagoshima-Chuo. The announcement was made in late August, giving travellers with September trips time to rebook or adjust itineraries.
What Was Affected
Kyushu Shinkansen services had been running on a reduced frequency schedule for several weeks, with some train types suspended and journey times extended on the Hakata–Kumamoto–Kagoshima-Chuo corridor. Express services such as the Mizuho and Sakura were running at lower capacity, affecting both booking availability and connection reliability.
From 18 September, all train types return to their standard timetable, including peak-hour departures and the Mizuho fast services that connect Hakata to Kagoshima-Chuo in approximately 79 minutes.
What This Means for Travellers
If you have a rail pass or tickets for Kyushu travel from 18 September onwards, no changes are required — your bookings remain valid. If you have tickets dated before 18 September and your journey falls during the disrupted period, JR Kyushu has been offering free rebooking or refunds, depending on the fare type.
For those planning trips after mid-September, the practical picture is back to normal. The Kyushu Shinkansen links Fukuoka to Kumamoto (approximately 33 minutes on the Sakura), Shin-Yatsushiro, and Kagoshima-Chuo, making it the most efficient way to cover southern Kyushu’s main cities without a car or domestic flight.

The most cost-effective way to cover the island by train is usually a regional rail pass. The JR Kyushu Rail Pass covers all Shinkansen and limited express services across the island and is available in 3-day, 5-day, and 7-day versions. It must be purchased before arriving in Japan or through authorised resellers in the country.
