Typhoon Chan-hom made landfall near the Kanto region on 11 August, forcing the cancellation of more than 60 flights at Tokyo’s two main international airports. ANA suspended all departures and arrivals at Narita International for several hours during the storm’s passage. Haneda Airport also saw significant cancellations across multiple carriers. Both airports had largely resumed normal operations by the morning of 12 August.
What Happened
Chan-hom was the latest in a series of typhoons to track through Japan’s main island this summer. The storm brought strong winds and heavy rain to the Tokyo metropolitan area on the afternoon and evening of 11 August, leading airlines to pull scheduled services rather than operate in hazardous conditions.
ANA confirmed it cancelled all Narita operations during the peak disruption window. JAL also reported cancellations, as did several international carriers operating on the Tokyo routes. Passengers who had already checked in or were in transit faced delays of several hours at both terminals.
Ground transport was also affected: Narita Express (N’EX) services between Narita and Shinjuku were suspended during the storm; the Keisei Skyliner connecting Narita to Ueno operated on a reduced schedule. Bus services to and from both airports experienced delays.
Current Status
As of 12 August, both Haneda and Narita were operating normally. Remaining disruption is expected to be limited to flights that were rebooked from 11 August into subsequent days, where seats on popular routes may be full. Passengers on affected services should check directly with their airline for rebooking options and compensation eligibility.
