The most accessible and popular day trip from Aomori. Hirosaki is best known for its castle — one of only twelve original Edo-period castle keeps remaining in Japan — and for the 2,600 cherry trees in its grounds, which produce what many consider Japan’s finest sakura display in late April to early May. The moat fills with fallen petals, the castle is reflected in still water between them, and the crowds (large in peak season) gather from before sunrise.

The full gorge walk takes 4–5 hours. For a day trip, the most practical section is the central 5 kilometres between Yakeyama and Nenokuchi, which includes the best waterfalls and takes approximately 90 minutes. The cape at the northern end of the Tsugaru Peninsula is the point from which Honshu Island is closest to Hokkaido — approximately 19 kilometres of open strait. The experience is primarily geographical: wind-battered cliffs, a lighthouse, and the visible entrance shaft of the Seikan Tunnel at sea level below. On clear days, Hokkaido is visible as a blue line on the horizon. The journey is long relative to the time at the destination, making this better as a rental car day trip than a public transport one.

Hirosaki Brewery and Cider Country

A shorter option combining the Hirosaki JR trip with the Hirosaki Brewing Company, which produces apple cider from local orchards.
