Greater Bay Airlines Launches Daily Hong Kong–Okinawa Service from July 2026
Greater Bay Airlines, the Hong Kong-based budget carrier, has filed routes to add daily nonstop service between Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) and Naha Airport in Okinawa (OKA). The service is scheduled to begin on 11 July 2026 and run through 3 September 2026, operating with Boeing 737-800 aircraft at one daily frequency throughout the summer season. The filing was reported by aviation tracker AeroRoutes on 11 May 2026.
What the Route Offers
The new connection puts Okinawa within easy reach of Hong Kong travellers without a stopover — a convenience not previously available through Greater Bay’s platform. Flight time on the roughly 2,200-kilometre sector runs approximately three to three-and-a-half hours.
Okinawa attracts visitors primarily for its clear sub-tropical waters, white-sand beaches, and a distinct Ryukyu cultural heritage that sets it apart from mainland Japan’s cities. The archipelago is also notably less crowded than Tokyo or Kyoto in summer, making it a natural choice for regional travellers looking to sidestep peak-season pressure on Japan’s major urban sites.
Context: Okinawa’s Growing Connectivity
The summer-only filing is consistent with demand patterns: Okinawa draws the largest share of its international visitors between June and September, when warm sea temperatures make diving, snorkelling, and beach travel the primary draws. Greater Bay Airlines launches the route as competition on Japan routes from Hong Kong has tightened, with budget operators accelerating expansions across Asia-Pacific.
If the seasonal route performs well, an extension to a year-round schedule is possible — though Greater Bay has made no public commitment beyond the 3 September end date.

If you are visiting Japan later this summer, it is worth noting that Japan’s international departure tax rises to ¥3,000 from 1 July 2026 — up from the current ¥1,000 — which will apply to all passengers departing Naha or any other Japanese airport from that date.
Tickets for Greater Bay Airlines’ HKG–OKA summer service have not yet gone on sale at time of writing; fares will be bookable directly through the airline’s platform.
