The Nebuta Festival (Nebuta Matsuri) returns to Aomori City from 2 to 7 August 2027 - the same fixed dates it has occupied every year since the modern festival was formalised. If you are planning a Japan summer trip with flexibility, building an August itinerary around Aomori’s festival week gives you access to one of the country’s most visually spectacular events.
What Happens During the Festival
Nebuta centres on a nightly parade of enormous illuminated floats - structures of wire, washi paper, and pigment, built to resemble warriors from Japanese mythology, kabuki drama, and historical legend. Floats typically reach six metres in height and twelve metres in width. Up to 20 floats parade each evening through a circuit of central Aomori streets, surrounded by taiko drummers, flute players, and haneto - costumed dancers who leap and chant to the rhythm.
The schedule for 2027:
- August 2-3: Children’s and large float procession, 19:10-21:00
- August 4-6: Large float procession, 18:45-21:00
- August 7: Daytime procession (13:00-15:00), Marine Procession and fireworks at Aomori Bay (from 19:15)
The closing fireworks on 7 August over Aomori Bay mark the end of the official festival, but the city’s atmosphere remains festive throughout the week.
Practical Information
Tickets: Free standing space exists along the parade route; paid grandstand seats (typically around ¥1,800-¥2,000) offer better views and sell out weeks in advance. Book grandstand tickets through the official nebuta.jp site or JTB Japan travel.
Joining the parade: Visitors can participate as haneto dancers by renting a traditional costume (¥2,000-¥5,000) from rental shops near the venue on the day. Participation is genuinely welcomed rather than merely tolerated.
Getting there: Aomori City is around three hours from Tokyo by Tohoku Shinkansen to Shin-Aomori Station. JR Pass holders can travel on standard Hayabusa and Hayate services. Book Shinkansen seats for the first week of August well in advance - capacity fills significantly in festival week.
Accommodation: Hotels in Aomori City for festival week book out months ahead. Hirosaki (40 minutes by train) and Hachinohe (30 minutes) offer viable alternatives as a base.
The Nebuta Museum for Year-Round Visits
Visitors to Aomori outside the festival window can see full-scale festival floats at the Wa Rasse Nebuta Museum on the waterfront, which displays six floats year-round alongside exhibitions on float construction and festival history. It is one of the most well-executed regional museum experiences in Tohoku.
Combining with Other Tohoku Festivals
Nebuta falls during the peak of the Tohoku summer festival season. Sendai’s Tanabata Matsuri runs 6-8 August, one day after Nebuta ends, making it straightforward to travel south from Aomori to Sendai on the 8th and experience both festivals in a single trip. Akita’s Kanto Festival also runs 3-6 August - possible with careful train planning but requires an overnight between the two.
