Sapporo Snow Festival

The Sapporo Snow Festival (Sapporo Yuki Matsuri) began in 1950 when local high school students built six snow statues in Odori Park. Over seven decades it has grown into one of Asia’s largest winter events, drawing around 2 million visitors across seven days in early February. The festival is free to enter at all sites and represents the most accessible way to see large-scale ice and snow sculpture anywhere in the world.

The Three Sites

Odori Site is the festival’s core - an 11-block stretch of Odori Park running east to west through central Sapporo. The main sculptures here are enormous: multi-storey recreations of world landmarks, Japanese castles, anime characters, and abstract forms, some carved from blocks of snow transported from the mountains east of the city. The largest structures take over a month to build and are only visible for the seven festival days before they begin to melt. The site opens in the morning and illuminations run until 10pm each evening, when the sculptures glow against the dark sky.

Susukino Site focuses on ice rather than snow: dozens of transparent ice sculptures stand along the main entertainment strip of Susukino, Sapporo’s nightlife district. The ice medium allows for translucent detail work - fish, flowers, human figures - that snow cannot hold. This site is also where the international ice sculpture competition is held.

Tsudome Site on the city’s east side provides participatory winter activities - ice slides, snow tube runs, and snowmobile rides aimed at families with children. Shuttle buses run from Odori to Tsudome throughout the festival.

Cultural Significance

The festival coincides with Hokkaido’s deepest winter, when Sapporo averages -4 to -7°C daily and snowfall is reliable and heavy. The sculptures are built from natural snow - no manufactured snow is used - which makes the timing dependent on Hokkaido’s climate. Sapporo receives approximately 6 metres of snow per year, more than any major city in the world, making the raw material abundant. The event demonstrates how Hokkaido residents approach winter not as an obstacle but as the defining feature of their culture.

Practical Tips

Book hotels in central Sapporo (Odori, Susukino, or Sapporo Station area) at least six months ahead - the city’s hotel capacity is absorbed entirely during festival week. Rates are approximately 30-50% higher than shoulder season as of recent years.

Dress in serious winter layers: a base layer, insulating mid-layer, and a waterproof outer jacket. Hand warmers (kairo) are sold at convenience stores and are worth having. Rubber-soled winter boots with grip are essential - the footpaths around Odori Park are compressed snow and ice.

Sapporo New Chitose Airport is approximately 40 minutes from the city by express train (JR Rapid Airport, approximately 1,150 yen). From Tokyo, the fastest option is a 1-hour 35-minute flight rather than the 5+ hour shinkansen plus limited express combination. Book flights early in the season for February travel - they sell out.
