Kansai has one of the densest rail networks in the world, with multiple competing private railways, JR lines, and subway systems covering the same routes. This redundancy is useful once you understand it - you can often choose between faster, cheaper, or more scenic options for the same journey. Here is a practical breakdown of how to move around the region efficiently.
Kansai transport at a glance (fares as of 2026):
| Route or pass | Time | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Osaka to Kyoto, JR Special Rapid | 30 minutes | ¥580 (Hankyu ¥410, 44 minutes) |
| Kyoto to Nara, Kintetsu | 35 minutes | ¥760 (JR ¥720, 44 minutes) |
| Osaka Namba to Nara, Kintetsu | 35 minutes | ¥560 |
| Osaka or Kyoto to Himeji, JR | 58-80 minutes | ¥1,520 from Osaka; ¥2,310 from Kyoto |
| Kansai Thru Pass | 2 or 3 days | ¥4,900 / ¥6,200 |
| Osaka 1-day subway pass; Kyoto 1-day bus pass | Unlimited rides | ¥820; ¥700 |
Getting to Kansai
From Tokyo by Shinkansen: The Tokaido Shinkansen from Shin-Osaka to Tokyo takes approximately 2 hours 15 minutes (Nozomi, no JR Pass) or 2 hours 30 minutes (Hikari, JR Pass-compatible). The unreserved fare is ¥13,870; reserved seats cost approximately ¥14,720. The JR Pass covers the Hikari and Kodama services but not the faster Nozomi. Travellers not holding a JR Pass can compare highway bus and Shinkansen prices with Omio - overnight buses on the Tokyo–Kansai corridor typically cost ¥4,000–8,000, roughly half the unreserved Shinkansen fare.
From Kansai International Airport (KIX): The Haruka Airport Express connects KIX to Kyoto Station (75 minutes, ¥3,490 reserved / ¥2,690 IC card for Osaka residents with discount) and Shin-Osaka (50 minutes, ¥2,380). If you have an IC Osaka Card or certain rail passes, the Haruka fare is discounted significantly. Alternatively, the Nankai Rapi:t runs from KIX to Namba in 38 minutes (¥1,450). Budget option: Limousine Bus from KIX to major hotels costs ¥1,600–2,000 but takes 1–1.5 hours depending on traffic.
From Osaka Itami Airport (domestic flights): Limousine buses connect Itami to Osaka Station (25 minutes, ¥640), Namba (30 minutes, ¥640), and Kyoto Station (55 minutes, ¥1,340).
For groups or early/late arrivals, pre-booked private airport transfers are an option worth comparing against the bus fares above.
The Kansai Thru Pass
The Kansai Thru Pass (also called the Surutto Kansai Pass) is the most useful regional pass for visitors exploring multiple cities. It covers unlimited rides on most private railways (Hankyu, Keihan, Kintetsu, Nankai), subways in Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, and Kobe, and selected bus lines.
- 2-day pass: ¥4,900
- 3-day pass: ¥6,200
The 2-day pass pays for itself if you make three intercity journeys: for example, Osaka → Kyoto (¥410 by Hankyu), Kyoto → Nara (¥760 by Kintetsu), and Nara → Osaka (¥560 by Kintetsu). The pass does not need to be used on consecutive days.
What the Kansai Thru Pass does not cover: JR trains (including the Haruka and Shinkansen), JR buses, and most tourist-specific services. If you’re arriving by Shinkansen and staying within Kansai, the Thru Pass handles almost everything else.
Between Cities
Osaka to Kyoto: Fastest is JR Special Rapid (30 minutes, ¥580 from Osaka Station to Kyoto Station). Cheaper alternative: Hankyu from Umeda to Hankyu Kyoto Kawaramachi (44 minutes, ¥410) - this option is covered by the Kansai Thru Pass. Keihan from Yodoyabashi to Demachiyanagi takes 50 minutes (¥430) and drops you near the Higashiyama temple district.
Kyoto to Nara: Kintetsu is the most direct (35 minutes express, ¥760 from Kintetsu Kyoto to Kintetsu Nara). JR takes 44 minutes (¥720, with a change at Kizu for local trains). The Kintetsu option deposits you closer to the deer park.
Osaka to Nara: Kintetsu direct from Osaka Namba to Kintetsu Nara (35 minutes express, ¥560). Covered by the Kansai Thru Pass.
Osaka or Kyoto to Kobe: JR from Osaka Station to Sannomiya (24 minutes, ¥410). Hankyu from Umeda to Hankyu Kobe Sannomiya (30 minutes, ¥330). Both options are fast and frequent.
Osaka or Kyoto to Himeji: JR Special Rapid from Osaka to Himeji takes 58 minutes (¥1,520). From Kyoto, allow 80 minutes (¥2,310). Shinkansen from Shin-Osaka to Himeji is 30 minutes (¥2,720) but adds transfer time.
Within Cities
Osaka Subway: The city has a comprehensive metro system (8 lines). A single ride costs ¥240–420 depending on distance. The 1-day subway pass costs ¥820 and pays for itself after 3–4 rides. An IC card (ICOCA, Suica) speeds up boarding and is accepted on buses and convenience store payments throughout the trip.
Kyoto Buses: Kyoto City Bus runs to most temple areas. The flat-rate zone covers most central sights at ¥230/ride. The 1-day bus pass costs ¥700 and makes sense if you’re visiting more than 3 sites in the northwest or northeast temple districts. The Kyoto Subway 1-day pass (¥800) is better for covering longer distances between stations.
IC Cards: ICOCA (issued by JR West) and Suica (JR East) are interchangeable across all transport in Kansai. Buy an ICOCA at Kansai International or any JR station (¥2,000 including ¥500 refundable deposit). Load it with ¥3,000–5,000 at the start of your trip and top up at ticket machines.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis in Kansai start at approximately ¥680 for the first 1.5km. Go! (formerly MOV) and S.RIDE apps allow cashless booking from a Japanese phone number. For international visitors, DiDi is often the most accessible app requiring only an international card. Short hops within Gion or from Kyoto Station to temple areas typically cost ¥800–1,500.
Practical Notes
JR Pass holders should note: the pass covers JR trains across the region (including the Haruka, JR Special Rapid Osaka–Kyoto–Himeji, and trains toward Nara) but does not cover private railways (Hankyu, Keihan, Kintetsu, Nankai). If you will use the JR Pass for the Shinkansen between Tokyo and Osaka, it’s worth modelling whether the Thru Pass or pay-as-you-go on IC card makes more sense for within-Kansai travel.
