Gozan no Okuribi (Daimonji)

Gozan no Okuribi - commonly called Daimonji - is one of the most atmospheric events in the Japanese calendar. Each year on the evening of 16 August, five enormous bonfires are lit on the mountains ringing Kyoto to close the Obon festival. The fires burn for approximately 30 minutes each, visible across the city, and mark the moment when the spirits of ancestors - welcomed into homes at the start of Obon three days earlier - are returned to the spirit world.

The Five Fires

The bonfires are not simply flames: each is a shaped character or symbol laid out in a grid of burning pine. They light in sequence beginning at 8pm:

• Daimonji (大, meaning “large”) on Nyoigatake, the mountain directly above the Ginkakuji temple in eastern Kyoto. This is the largest and most famous, visible from central Kyoto.
• Myoho (妙法, from the Lotus Sutra) on Matsugasaki Nishiyama and Higashiyama, two characters on separate peaks read together.
• Funagata (ship shape) on Nishigamo Funayama in the north-west of the city.
• Hidari Daimonji (a second large character, mirrored) on Okitayama in the north-west.
• Torii (the shape of a Shinto gate) on Mandara-yama in the Saga Arashiyama area to the west.

Each fire is maintained by a neighbourhood association that has held the responsibility for generations. The pine faggots are lit by monks and local volunteers who hike to the mountain positions before dusk.

Where to Watch

Viewing requires a clear line of sight to the relevant mountain, and not all five are visible from any single location. The Kamo River banks between Sanjo and Imadegawa bridges offer views of the main Daimonji character and, from the right spot, a glimpse of the Myoho fires. This is the most accessible free viewing area and crowds are large.

Rooftop spaces at hotels and restaurants in central Kyoto and around the Ginkakuji area command the best angles. Many hotels - particularly those north of Oike-dori - offer Daimonji viewing packages; these book out weeks ahead. The rooftop of the Hyatt Regency Kyoto and various ryokan in the Higashiyama district have established viewing events.

For Funagata and Torii, positions in the Kamigamo and Arashiyama areas respectively give the clearest sight lines - though watching those fires means missing Daimonji unless you are in a car.

Practical Notes

The 16 August date is fixed. Timing begins at 8pm precisely; the entire event concludes by roughly 8:45pm. Obon traffic is heavy across Kyoto for the entire period 13-16 August - plan extra time for any transport. The Kamo River banks are crowded from 6pm onward; arriving by 7:15pm gives time to find a position. Bring water: mid-August evenings in Kyoto are humid and warm, typically 28-30°C at dusk. Many locals bring picnic meals and watch from bridges over the river.
